Polygon has announced the resumption of its zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (zkEVM) mainnet beta after it faced downtime following issues with its blockchain sequencer.

Polygon also stated that it would follow up with a detailed post-mortem on the incident sometime early next week.

Polygon zkEVM Mainnet Beta Resumes Operations

Polygon announced the resumption of operations on its official X account, stating that Polygon’s Emergency Council for the zkEVM Mainnet Beta activated the emergency state, allowing the zkEVM’s core team to apply a necessary fix and resume operations.

“The Emergency Council for Polygon zkEVM Mainnet Beta activated the emergency state to allow the Polygon zkEVM Core Team to apply a necessary fix to the system, allowing L1 settlement of Polygon zkEVM Mainnet Beta to resume.”

The emergency state was deactivated following the completion of the fix. This means any further system updates will be subject to a 10-day time lock before they take effect. Polygon also stated that a detailed post-mortem report of the incident would be published sometime next week.

“Upon completing this upgrade, the emergency state was deactivated, meaning any further updates to the system are subject to a 10-day timelock before taking effect. We will follow up with a detailed post-mortem on the @0xPolygonFdn forum early next week. We thank both the Emergency Council members and the teams of engineers for their diligent work this weekend on resolving this issue.”

The zkEVM Downtime

Polygon had announced its zkEVM Mainnet Beta was facing downtime, attributing it to a blockchain sequencer issue. The blockchain sequencer is responsible for organizing and combining transactions into batches and relaying them to the Polygon zkEVM smart contract on the Ethereum network. Polygon had stated at the time.

“Polygon zkEVM Mainnnet Beta faced an issue with its sequencer due to an L1 reorg. We are working on fully resolving the issue and will follow up with a detailed post-mortem. This only impacts Polygon zkEVM (which is the only rollup) and does not impact Polygon PoS, Polygon CDK, or any chain that has deployed using Polygon CDK. We look forward to our release of the second-gen zkEVM in the coming weeks.”

Despite the setback, Polygon assured users that other crucial parts of its ecosystem, such as its Proof-of-Stake network, Polygon CDK, or any chain deployed using the Polygon CDK, were functioning normally and were not impacted.

Users Surprised At Silence

Some users on X were curious why the larger crypto community has remained mum regarding the prolonged network downtime on Polygon. One user posted on X,

“why is nobody talking about how Polygon zkevm has been down for 10 hours and is still down?”

Another user highlighted the same thing, wondering why no one has said anything despite the Polygon zkEVM being down for over ten hours. Polygon had launched the zkEVM to its Mainnet Beta in March 2023 in an effort to enable developers to deploy smart contracts with increased finality and lower costs. The network had stated that the open-source zkEVM would allow decentralized applications to scale via transaction batching and unlock a higher level of performance.
